Description
A former member of the French Resistance, Edmond Reveil, 98, recounts the execution of 47 German soldiers and a French woman accused of collaboration and taken prisoner in Correze, in central France, in June 1944. "We had to feed them. We had to look after them. We couldn't keep them. That's why they were shot," says this former member of the Francs-Tireurs et Partisans (FTP). "Every member of the maquis killed his man, except those who didn't want to," he adds, as excavations to find the remains are due to begin on Tuesday in Meymac. The mayor of the town, Philippe Brugere, reacted by saying that there was an "omerta" (silence) about the execution, and he praised the "particularly honourable" action of the former Resistance fighter. "It would be inconceivable" that this grave "should be consigned to the dustbin of history when there are witnesses who could tell us where it was," he added. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
