At the eastern front, near the Russian-held city of Bakhmut, artillery men light up their cigarettes as they take a break from their part in Ukraine's long-expected offensive against Moscow's invasion. The battery's commander, who goes by the nom-de-guerre Volyna, tells AFP that their operation is going successfully, with their units "encircling Bakhmut and kicking the Russians out of Klyshchyvka," a strategic high point near the city.
