Description
On the Norwegian-Russian border, life has changed. From commerce to border security, the invasion of Ukraine has transformed the way Norway and Russia co-exist. "When I came here in the beginning of the 2000s, we were having football matches with the Russian border guard.... now, everything except like necessary cooperation --like search and rescue is still the same -- has stopped" notes Lars Erik Gausen, company sergeant in Pasvik Company of the Norwegian military. For the Russians living over the border, the mayor of Kirkenes says it's important "to separate Putin's regime and Russians in general because these are two different things". But for some suspicion is ripe "but there is obviously intelligence taking place...people from the Russian side, they are not here just as tourists" says Frode Berg, a former Norwegian border guard and jailed for espionage in Russia.
