Description
Faced with near-constant illegal logging, forest engineers in Romania's Carpathian mountains are using technology to fight back. "The most serious problem is systematic, organised theft" says Gabriel Oltean, one of those trying to stop the loggers by installing cameras at key transit points that broadcast their activities live on YouTube. The forests blanket the 1,500 kilometre mountain range that spans eight nations, a region that is supposedly one of the best preserved in the EU. But a lack of enforcement combined with the vast profits available from logging put the forests at risk, along with the habitats they provide for rare species.
