Description
Faced with critics who accuse maize of being too water-hungry in the context of global warming, Emmanuel Sagot, a farmer in Auchay-sur-Vendée in western France, whose production relies on a so-called 'mega-basin', defends his agricultural model. The Vendée has 25 of these controversial water reserves, some of which were installed 15 years ago. 'We made the choice in southern Vendée to substitute summer boreholes with winter pumping. We keep it in reserve,' says Sagot. 'Today, water levels are proving us right ... they are much higher than they were before all these reservoirs were created.' IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
