Description
The Adamello, the largest glacier in the Italian Alps, is dying a slow death from global warming. Its guardians give it less than a century to live.
Scientists and environmental activists walk the rocky slopes of the Adamello-Presanella massif, whose peak is Mount Adamello at 3,554 meters, as part of the "Carovana dei Ghiacciai", an annual journey across the Alps to witness the effects of climate change on glaciers. "The glacier has lost almost 2.7 km since the end of the 19th century," sums up Cristian Ferrari, president of the Glacier Commission of the Alpine Society of Trentino (SAT) and a member of the expedition. Like other Alpine glaciers, the Adamello is suffering from reduced snowfall (-50% last year). The snow cover is thinner and summer temperatures - which are getting longer and longer - give it less time to freeze. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES ARRANGED IN SEQUENCES
