Description
Malians in Bamako and members of civil society are calling for negotiations with armed groups in the north of the country after they claimed control of the town of Bourem. "The authorities are in the logic of making concessions in such a way that we disregard certain actions of the past," asserts Pape Diallo, secretary general of the Yerewolo movement, one of the most active organizations in support of the junta that took control of the country by force in 2020. Mali's northern ex-rebels, from the Coordination des mouvements de l'Azawad (CMA), an alliance of predominantly Tuareg groups, said on Monday they were "in wartime" with the central Malian state, jeopardizing the so-called Algiers peace agreement signed in 2015.
