Description
The city of Cape Town is clamping down on illegal electricity connections which they claim is taking a toll on the grid. Repairs to illegal cable connections "comes at great expense ... the illegal connections for quarter two we have spent four million rand" says a Mayoral Committee member for Electricity in the City, Alderman Beverley van Rheenen. Residents argue that they will pay for electricity but they are not being provided the basic service. "(We) will fight for survival and this time survival is connecting to the grid unlawfully" says one resident, Fernando Williams. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
