Description
Danish shipping giant Maersk launches the world's first container ship running on bio-methanol: the Laura Maersk -- a key step in its effort to lower its huge carbon footprint.
European Commission head Ursula von der Leyen christens the ship during an inauguration ceremony in Copenhagen's harbour. The Laura will help reduce Maersk's CO2 emissions by 100 tonnes a day, compared to the same vessel running on fuel oil, they say.
Built in South Korea by Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) and fitted with a dual-fuel engine, the ship is a relatively small model that will be able to transport 2,136 20-foot (TEU) containers. "The ship itself, from the outside, it's not as different. The difference here is that the propulsion is done by methanol", explains of one the ship's captains, Pieter van Rijn. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
