Description
In the farm of Ukrainian harvester Oleksandr Ryabinin, in Shestirnya, it's sunflower seed harvest time and his farm has gathered more than half ot its crop, which it sells on to traders for export. But this year, he hasn't "sold a single kilogram of sunflower seeds". As with grain, exports have been hit by the closure of Ukraine's Black Sea routes and Russian attacks on river ports. And the lack of demand means traders are offering prices for seeds that are too low. "There's no point in selling," laments Oleksandr.
Sunflower seeds and their oil, used for cooking, are core exports for Ukraine, which in 2020/2021 produced 31 percent of all global sunflower oil, according to the USDA. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
