Ships, aircraft and troops take part in the first-ever joint ASEAN exercises, hosted in Indonesia, staging drills in waters and humanitarian exercises on islands close to the South China Sea. Despite recent territorial disputes in the region, the 'ASEX01' exercise, or ASEAN Solidarity Exercise, consists of non-combat drills, such as joint patrol, medical assistance and disaster relief.
