Description
An exhibition in Harlem is showcasing paintings, sculptures and photos of artists who have been incarcerated, using art to address the issue of mass incarceration in America. Critics of the US justice system often point to hard data, such as America's exceptionally high per-capita prison rate as evidence of a draconian system in need of change. "Prison has a way of erasing people", says Mark Loughney, who made a series of hundreds of portraits of detainees while he was incarcerated: "I hope (visitors) take away a sense of humanity, in the people that are put in prison".
