Description
Refugees fleeing the Armenian separatist enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh describe their experiences. The Asryan family say they burned all their valuable possessions including documents and photographs after fleeing their home to avoid being slaughtered by Azerbaijani troops. Angelina Asryan, 20, a law student, says their material possessions can be recreated but they will never get their homeland back. Her father Slavik, a retired police officer, says he hopes that Armenians will unite in the future and take back the territory. Svetlana Balayan, 58, said her children were so desperate for food en route from her home in the region that she had to stop to beg for bread. Nune Khachatryan, 55, says she wanted to take some soil from her home like her daughter did, but never had the chance as she knew she had to leave before the Azerbaijani forces arrived.
