Demonstrators gather in the Australian city of Sydney to protest against Israeli military action in Gaza after a surge of violence in the region. On Saturday, Hamas militants launched surprise attacks on a number of Israeli towns, firing at civilians and taking hostages. In response, Israel has declared war on the Islamist group and unleashed a barrage of strikes on Gaza. Hundreds have been killed on both sides of the fighting.
