Description
In an underground research area beneath London’s Kew Gardens, scientists study thousands of often weird and wonderful samples of fungi from all over the world, hoping they can help to unlock new medicines and tell us more about global ecosystems. Some of these scientists have helped author a new report from the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, called ‘The State of the World’s Plants and Fungi 2023’, in which they publish a new estimate for the total number of species of fungi: around 2.5 million. With only around 150,000 species described so far, researcher Laura Martinez-Suz says of the undocumented species, "we can try to decipher the roles that they have in ecosystems and for humans... But the only way of doing that is trying to name them... That is a huge challenge." IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
