Description
With less than two weeks to go until Switzerland holds parliamentary elections, Marco Chiesa, leader of the country's populist right, campaigns in his hometown Lugano. His Swiss People's Party (SVP), also known as the Democratic Union of the Centre (UDC), is likely to strengthen its position in parliament, despite being accused of xenophobia and flirting too closely with the far right. On the streets of Lugano, Chiesa is focused on questions surrounding migration. "We should choose the immigration that we have, at the moment it's simply something we are put through", Chiesa says. "The right people have to come, people who bring added value to our economy", he adds. Swiss businessmen point out that Switzerland is short of labour. However, the SVP - which has close ties with the business community - wants to limit the country's population to 10 million. The party, which is hoping to climb back close to the symbolic 30% threshold in the elections, has had its fingers rapped by the Federal Commission against Racism. The Commission criticised the party's campaign for being "xenophobic and inflammatory". IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
