Description
John Alvarez, accused of plotting against Nicolas Maduro's government, disclosed in a Venezuelan court that police subjected him to electric shocks on his genitals, ribs, knees, and beatings with a bat to force a confession. The officers from the Bolivarian National Police (PNB) implicated by Alvarez now belong to units that succeeded the disbanded Special Action Forces (FAES) in 2021 due to widespread human rights violation allegations. Activists claim that these new brigades continue to engage in abusive tactics, including arbitrary detentions, forced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, and torture.
