Israeli President Isaac Herzog says the Israeli army is targeting Palestinian group Hamas to "uproot the capability of the enemy to carry on with this campaign of destroying Israel" and in order to "break their backbone", during a press conference in Jerusalem. Israel's army has rained air and artillery strikes on Hamas targets in Gaza for six days since the Islamist militants launched their surprise onslaught that killed 1,200 Israelis, mostly civilians, and took about 150 hostages.
