Description
Essential to opening up the Casamance region of Senegal, the Dakar-Ziguinchor sea link has been closed since June 1, 2023. The port quays of the Casamance capital, usually teeming with passengers and traders, are now deserted. "For us vendors, all our activities are blocked because of this incident," laments Sira Mané, a shopkeeper who has seen her business decline. The line was suspended without any official explanation at a time when unrest shook Senegal following the conviction of opposition politician Ousmane Sonko in a moral corruption scandal. Faced with the silence of the authorities, Casamance entrepreneur Xavier Diatta launched an online petition calling for the link to be restored. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
