Fifty years ago, the Santiago National Stadium, now the main venue for the 2023 Pan American Games, was the Pinochet regime's largest detention and torture center since the 1973 coup. Journalist Vladimiro Mimica, now 78, had been in the stadium many times as a sports reporter. The dictatorship arrested him because of his socialist militancy and closeness to Salvador Allende and, paradoxically, brought him as a prisoner to this facility where an estimated 20,000 to 30,000 people were detained and tortured.
