Description
"In our cabin, I'm the only survivor", says Aïcha Traoré, one of around 400 survivors of the Timbuktu boat attack, which took place on September 7 in northern Mali. She and another survivor, Alhadj M'Bara, recall a day of unprecedented horror which destroyed dozens of lives and left the ferry -- which provided a regular link between Malian towns on the banks of the Niger river -- a burnt-out wreck. Nobody really knows who unleashed the 15-minute inferno of rockets, bullets and flames but even in a country accustomed to massacres attributed variously to jihadists, self-defence militias, or the army, the brutal attack stands out.
