Description
Albania's government wants to stem the flight of its young doctors, some of whom say they are "torn" between practising in their homeland or going abroad, with a law forcing them to work for up to five years in the Balkan state after graduation or else pay back their tuition fees. The legislation, which came into effect on October 1, has sparked angry protests in Tirana with many students demanding its annulment. "We consider this law to be unconstitutional, violating students' freedom to choose where they want to work," says fifth-year student and sometime protester Reant Kullaj outside Tirana University's Faculty of Medicine.
