Uruguay is known to be one of the most prosperous countries in Latin America, with its high per capita income, low level of inequality and poverty, and an almost total absence of extreme poverty, according to the World Bank. But in Montevideo, which concentrates almost half of the country's population of 3.5 million, 2,800 people live on the street, 55% more than in 2019, according to the latest survey by the Ministry of Social Development.
