Bolivians celebrate All Saints' Day with visits to cemeteries and offerings to the dead in the northern city of El Alto, adjacent to the capital city of La Paz. Indigenous customs indicate that souls visit the earth for a day and are welcomed with bread, fruit and music. The Mercedario Cemetery in the city of El Alto maintains the prayer tradition of inviting others to pray for the soul of a loved one and taking something from the table set for the deceased in return. During this feast, loaves of bread are prepared to symbolize the souls and reproduce "the ladders they used to get to heaven, the horses they used for the journey to earth," and everything people enjoyed while they were alive.
