For Japan's criminal underworld, social media is offering an anonymous way to connect with anyone from teenagers to pensioners who are willing to commit crimes to earn money from a "yami baito" -- a black-market part-time job. Scammers often target Japan's many lonely, wealthy and naive elderly people, stealing thousands of dollars. In 2022, damage incurred by yami baito crime rings and other organised fraudsters soared 30 percent from the previous year to top 37 billion yen (around $250 million), the first increase in eight years.
