Description
Hitachi Rail Group has unveiled the new 'Masaccio' hybrid tri-mode trains, built at its Pistoia plant in Tuscany. It is claimed to be the first train in Europe to use next-generation hybrid technology, which allows the trains to run on electrified lines, diesel engines and batteries. The company started rolling out the 'Masaccio' across Italy in late 2022 as part of a €1.23 billion deal with Italy's Trenitalia, with plans to expand its technology across central Europe, particularly Germany and France, by 2027. The train can reach speeds of 160 km/h and will help reduce emissions near residential or busy areas. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
