Description
Costa Rica's iconic "pura vida," synonymous with positivity and tranquility, is currently threatened by organized crime and drug trafficking, which have made 2023 the most violent year in the country's history, with 777 homicides through November 2023, according to data from the Organismo Investigativo Giudiziario (OIJ, police). According to Public Safety Minister Mario Zamora, who draws a parallel between organized crime and "cancer," it is necessary to work on prevention to keep the problem from spreading until it becomes "irreversible."
