Description
Specialists at the Lin Hatchery on the southern shores of Albania's Lake Ohrid rush to release the season's final batch of newly spawned trout as they fight to preserve a struggling indigenous species. Found nowhere else, the Ohrid Trout (known as 'Koran' in Albanian) has suffered from habitat destruction, overfishing and rampant pollution, partially brought on by an increase in lakeside tourism. "We have worked hard over the last three years to take it off the endangered species list," explains Olsi Cekici, the Lin Hatchery's manager, who says his team have released 1.7 million young trout this year alone. Preservation efforts go beyond the hatchery, with Albania and North Macedonia having signed agreements to ensure the species' survival. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
