Description
Spain, the world's leading producer and exporter of olive oil, is facing its lowest production in "the last 30 years" due to a historic drought, warns Rafael Pico, director of Asoliva, the sector's association. The country's potential "is much higher and has not been reached, precisely because of this drought", adds Carlos Carreira, manager of La Capilla, a farm producing olives. With supplies of this popular product dropping, prices have soared by more than 40 percent in the space of just a year, according to several industry associations. Pico points to repeated heat waves and failed rains, both increasingly frequent in a European region hit hard by climate change. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES ARRANGED IN SEQUENCES
