In Maputo, a prison is fighting tuberculosis, the world's second deadliest communicable disease after Covid. Overcrowding and subpar living conditions have made prisons a hotbed of TB, which killed 1.3 million people in 2022 according to the WHO. "For sick inmates who are in the contamination stage, which is the first stage, we restrict visits for two months in order to contain the disease," explains José Thanzene, head nurse at the B.O maximum security prison.
