Description
While floodwaters in Somalia’s southwestern Gedo region may have started to recede, distraught families who have lost their homes and livelihoods are now facing the risk of fatal disease. “What we fear the most is the spread of fatal diseases among the local communities after the floods destroyed toilets and water wells,” says Garboolow commissioner Mursal Mohamed Adan. In its latest update, the UN humanitarian agency OCHA said that 33 flooded Somalian districts had seen a significant increase in cases of Acute Watery Diarrhoea (AWD) or cholera and a rise in malaria cases.
