"Bolero is sung with the heart, with the soul," says 82-year-old bolero singer Migdalia Hechavarria at her home in Cuba's capital Havana, where photos of her with celebrities including Fidel Castro hang on a wall, as the genre of traditional Latin American love song is made UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. "I think it is a very important decision because bolero is the soundtrack that moves the most intimate sensations of the human being," says 72-year-old bolero singer Jose Antonio Ferrari at a traditional bar in Mexico City.
