Description
As nearly 200 nations meeting in Dubai approve a first-ever call for the world to transition away from fossil fuels, the prime culprit behind climate change, the Emirati leadership of the COP28 summit says the delegations at the UN climate talks "should be proud of our historic achievement." "Over the last two weeks we have worked very hard to secure a better future for our people and our planet," Sultan Al Jaber tells the closing plenary. Toughening language from an earlier draft that was roundly denounced, the agreement calls for "transitioning away from fossil fuels", yet stops short of calls during the summit for a "phase-out" of oil, gas and coal, which together account for around three-quarters of the emissions responsible for the planetary crisis.
