Description
At a plant inside ExxonMobil's sprawling Baytown, Texas petrochemical complex, plastic undergoes a controversial process known as chemical recycling. Unlike standard mechanical recycling, chemical recycling -- also called advanced recycling -- uses heat, chemical solvents or both to break plastic down into its basic building blocks, including chemicals and often liquid fuel. But environmentalists worry such facilities will lead consumers to believe that plastics, which are made from fossil fuels, are largely recyclable when they are not.
