Description
Anna Demkina used to live in the Russian city of Belgorod, near the border with Ukraine. Now, after a wave of intensifying air strikes on the city, she has moved to the town of Stary Oskol, further from the front. "We believe in the best" she says, speaking from the hotel where she is staying with her two children, "that this horror will finally end". Many like Demkina left Belgorod after December 30, when the city centre was hit by the deadliest strike on Russian soil since the start of the conflict in February 2022. Twenty-five people were killed, including children, and around 100 more were injured. Since then, strikes on Belgorod have continued and hundreds of civilians have chosen to leave.
