Description
A lack of rainfall due to the El Niño phenomenon, worsened by global warming, forced the Panama Canal administration to lower traffic and reduce the draft of vessels to 44 feet (13.4 meters), two less than previously allowed. According to the Panama Canal Deputy Administrator, Ilya Espino, the measures already in place are "not enough in a very dry year." There is a need for an "additional solution."
Six percent of the world's maritime trade passes through this strategic waterway, which in 80 km connects the Pacific Ocean with the Caribbean Sea. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
