Description
Aerial images show what remains of the Ebrar apartments complex in Kahramanmaras, an emblem of the destruction caused by the earthquake of February 6, 2023. The site used to consist of 22 apartment blocks, of which just one still stands, heavily damaged and awaiting demolition. Nearly 1,500 people lost their lives at the complex. Victims' belongings can still be seen scattered on the empty land, nearly a year on from the 7.8-magnitude earthquake, which struck close to Kahramanmaras, levelling huge swathes of southeastern Turkey and northern Syria and killing more than 50,000 in Turkey alone. Around 6,000 were killed in Syria. File images from February 10, 2023 also show the rescue operation that took place at the complex days after the earthquake. IMAGES AERIAL IMAGES
