Description
An opposition candidate has lodged an appeal with the Supreme Court of the Comoros calling for the results of the 14 January presidential election to be annulled and for a new "free and transparent" election to be organised. On January 16, the electoral commission of this Indian Ocean archipelago announced the victory of incumbent Azali Assoumani, with 62.97% of the vote and only a 16.30% turnout. Exasperated young people clashed with the police for two days in the streets of the capital Moroni, resulting in one death and five injuries. "We can only welcome this decision by our opponents to appeal to the electoral division of the Supreme Court. What we keep saying is that you can't turn the streets into institutions of judgement" says a government spokesman on the matter. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
