Description
For some on the French Pacific island of Tahiti, hosts of the Olympic 2024 surfing contest, the event this summer represents an 'economic opportunity' and a chance to 'show visitors the island's beauty', but for others, environmental concerns for local corals and a belief that the money should be spent elsewhere outweigh any excitement. Tahiti, around 15,000 kilometres (9,300 miles) from Paris, was selected to host the second Olympic surfing competition in history with the the aim of including France's overseas territories in the Games.
