Description
Moldova, one of Europe's poorest countries, has adopted a firm pro-EU stance under Maia Sandu’s presidency. In December 2023, EU leaders agreed to open formal membership negotiations with the former Soviet Republic. Among the measures taken to counter Moscow's influence, the government is offering free Romanian language courses, including in the autonomous southern region of Gagauzia, which hosts a Turkish minority that speaks mainly Russian. AFP attended one these classes. For many of the students, learning Romanian has become necessary to navigate the bureaucratic hurdles of daily life in the region. “If we want to stay here and keep our job, we must study and improve our knowledge of the language”, says one of the students, 46-year-old civil servant, Ivan Gaidarji.
