In a region that is an ANC voting stronghold, Chris Pappas is a rare thing, an opposition party white mayor elected by a black majority population. Pappas was elected mayor of uMngeni municipality in 2011, he is from the opposition party Democratic Alliance. Based in the region of Kwazulu-Natal, the mayor, who speaks fluent Zulu, has managed to rally a lot of support from the local community.
