Description
Families searching for their missing relatives say they have found at least 25 bags of human remains at a property in violence-ridden western Mexico. The Guerreros Buscadores collective say they found the remains next to two fire pits which they allege were likely used to burn the bodies of victims.
According to official figures, almost 100,000 people are missing in Mexico, 15,000 of which are in Jalisco state. Most disappearances have taken place since 2006, when the government deployed the military in the war on drugs, leading to a spiral of violence. Frustration at slow progress in official investigations has led families of the disappeared, especially mothers, to form groups that search for clandestine graves using picks and shovels. Western Mexico is home to -- among other criminal organizations -- the Jalisco New Generation cartel, one of Mexico's most powerful and violent drug trafficking groups. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
