Description
A new trash system similar to those used in Barcelona, Madrid and Buenos Aires is being tested in Harlem's Hamilton Heights neighborhood, with the aim of eliminating the proliferation of rats. Since the beginning of March more than 200,000 food-selling businesses have been required to use hard-lidded bins to store the millions of tons of garbage they produce annually. By 2026 residential buildings will also be required to use such containers. Since the new bins have been installed, Harlem resident Ron James says he "barely see rats on the streets at night."
