At a facility in Magurele, a small city outside the Romanian capital, Bucharest, researchers are working with the world's most intense laser. Hopes are high for the equipment's possible eventual uses, which include cancer treatment, dealing with nuclear waste and clearing man-made debris from the Earth's orbit. "When I see the work that has been done, I'm very moved" says Gerard Mourou, winner of the 2018 Nobel Prize in Physics, who is working at the site.
