Description
In a show of defiance against Russia and despite regular blackouts, young people in the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv continue to strive for a semblance of normality, gathering in cafes or rehearsing performances in the basement of the Kharkiv opera house. For the past two years the city has been under constant attack by Russian forces stationed just 40 kilometres (25 miles), but its young inhabitants have become accustomed to the looming threat. "You have to accept that if you stand in the street, you might die," 25-year-old Kristina Shapovalova told AFP. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES ARRANGED IN SEQUENCES N°34P484V
