Description
The citizens of North Macedonia are set to go to the polls to elect their president in a first round of voting that will take place on Wednesday 24 April. Questioned a few days before the vote, some say they want "change" and leaders who "work in the interests" of the country, while others say they want politicians who can quickly bring the country into the European Union, in the hope that this would create jobs and stem mass emigration. The two most likely candidates to go through to the second round are incumbent president Stevo Pendarovski, backed by the Social Democratic Union (SDSM), and Gordana Siljanovska Davkova, backed by the VMRO-DPMNE, the main opposition right-wingers.
