Description
Between 600,000 and one million liters of water have been looted daily from Lake Patzcuaro, in the western State of Michoacan, to irrigate avocado, according to the region’s civil guard. Joint efforts by the civil guard and municipal police aim to curb this extraction, particularly in the Oponguio community where it's most prevalent. Checkpoints have been established near pipes, with authorities intercepting people transporting water. Despite ongoing tourism and local transport, boats now navigate through a reduced channel due to drought-induced low water levels. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
