Taking control of Chasiv Yar's strategic heights would open the road for Russia to other important towns in the Donbas region. It lies 20 kilometres (12 miles) west of the town of Bakhmut, which was flattened by months of artillery fire before it was captured by Moscow in May 2023. STOCKSHOTS
