Description
"Our fight for dignity and the preservation of our ancestors' heritage must not stop with our generation," says Abdellah El Gourd, a gnawa master (spiritual music originating in West Africa, introduced by the descendants of slaves) and friend and collaborator of American pianist Randy Weston. After Weston, Idrees Sulieman and Max Roach crossed the Atlantic to play and record in Tangiers, the city became a landmark for great American jazzmen. This heritage will be celebrated on Tuesday in the northern Moroccan metropolis, on International Jazz Day. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
