Left-wing MEP Raphaël Glucksmann was forced to leave a May Day rally in Saint-Etienne, near Lyon, without participating, after paint was thrown at him and dozens of activists hurled insults. "That's their idea of democratic debate, not ours. We're determined democrats, democrats to the core," said Glucksmann -- lead candidate for the French PS-Place Publique list in the upcoming European elections -- after noting the presence of political flags from France's hard-left parties at the time of the incident.
